Student Health Services is seeking a Program Coordinator for CCRP (Cove Collegiate Recovery Program) to oversee the daily operations of our substance-free and harm-reduction recovery services for students. This position will oversee a team of student staff and volunteers to offer peer coaching and student-driven activities to foster substance-free community and connection. The ideal candidate will have direct experience with collegiate recovery work and experience working in higher education. The Program Coordinator will play a critical role in promoting student health, resilience, and academic success.

The Program Coordinator for CCRP is a partial year career position with a 4-week unpaid summer furlough. Positions with summer

work breaks contain regularly scheduled non-work periods during which the Program Coordinator remains an employee,

retains health benefits, but is not at work.

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited clinical laboratory, and a campus pharmacy. Other departments include Counseling and Psychological Services, Case Management and Psychiatry Services providing mental health support; Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; Cove Collegiate Recovery Program (CCRP) where students receive harm-reduction and recovery services; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance and Referral Programs.

Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. JOB SUMMARY

Cove Collegiate Recovery Program (CCRP) provides support and a safe environment for students to receive harm-reduction and recovery services. Reporting to the Director of Prevention, Education, and Intervention Services, the Recovery Program Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of CCRP.

The Program Coordinator oversees the daily operations of our substance-free and harm-reduction recovery services for students. As a seasoned health education professional, they support students on their recovery journeys through both individual and group engagement. Their role emphasizes coaching, programming, outreach, and administration to promote student health, resilience, and academic success.

This Recovery Program Coordinator leads a team of student staff and volunteers responsible for developing and implementing student-driven activities and events throughout the academic year, fostering community and connection. The incumbent collaborates closely with campus offices and departments to reduce stigma surrounding substance use and strives to cultivate a campus-wide community dedicated to enhancing student access to services.

This position collaborates closely with Student Health Outreach and Promotions (SHOP) and the Center of Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment (CARE) to support and offer evidence-based prevention practices related to health outreach, promotion, and education services specifically related to substance use-related health issues and concerns.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $6,917 -$7,417 per month for 11 months. Salary is commensurate with skills, unique qualifications and years of experience.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Coaching, Intervention, and Referral

• Work with students to set goals and create individualized change/recovery plans that focus on harm reduction and recovery skills.

• Facilitate brief substance use intervention sessions using motivational interviewing techniques and holistic health coaching.

• Provide information and referrals regarding treatment options and additional support for students and their community of support (when appropriate).

• Support the on-campus substance-free recovery housing program by communicating with prospective students and families. Provide direct ongoing collective meeting/support spaces.

• Track and maintain a caseload of students who may need continual coaching and engagement Connect and coordinate with campus and community agencies to ensure that students receive appropriate services.

30% - Direct Recovery and Harm Reduction Programming

• Plan, implement, supervise, and evaluate policies, programs, and services to address alcohol and other drug (AOD) issues, enhancing student health and academic success.

• Collaborate with key stakeholders on and off campus to implement a comprehensive, multidisciplinary health approach for students as it relates to AOD and harm-reduction practices.

• Review and develop student-centered programs and support services for students in recovery, including substance-free recovery housing.

• Create and develop programs to draw awareness and support of substance-free campus culture, specifically for the on-campus support of the on-campus substance-free recovery housing program students.

• Serve as an educator, group facilitator, and mentor, structuring and supervising peer-to-peer activities and overseeing workshop development by peer mentors.

10% - Outreach

• Provide oversight and coordination for student groups, including organizations, volunteers, and peer education groups, to create and deliver innovative harm reduction and recovery programs.

• Collaborate with campus and community offices to support relevant policies and protocols related to student AOD use.

• Maintain a visible network of recovery allies, strengthen collaborations, and advocate for policies that enhance student success.

• Foster collaborative relationships with various units within student health, such as CAPS, CARE, and SHOP, as well as external units like Slug Support, Ombuds, Financial Aid, and Housing. This collaboration aims to create a supportive community for students in recovery.

10% - Administration

• Support the administration and oversight of the AOD prevention programs/training and provide policy development support to enhance student success by offering training around AOD-related student health matters. Guide strategic plans related to intervention and delivery of services.

• Facilitate coordination with university AOD policies and ensure compliance.

• Recruit, train, manage, supervise, and evaluate paid and volunteer CCRP student staff and interns, including peer mentors.

• Oversight of the implementation and training requirements for student staff to become Peer Educators/Mentors.

• Ensure professional development opportunities for staff and volunteers by fostering cross-unit or cross-UC campus collaboration, training, or engagement.

• Implement case management practices that track, monitor, and assess student engagement and progress.

• Monitor and facilitate localizing standard operating procedures and protocols related to CCRP.

• Assist the Director in evaluating and refining services annually.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., health education, public health, psychology) and/or equivalent experience and training

• Must have 3-5 years of experience directly related to alcohol and drug counseling such as experience achieved through health promotion, BASICS coaching, health education and/or program design/delivery

• Demonstrated knowledge of addiction theories and the implications for behavior change in alcohol and drug counseling

• Thorough knowledge of health promotion and education principles, including program design and delivery

• Ability to demonstrate the application of health promotion, behavior change, and population-based theories and models in the context of higher education

• Proven skills in the development and delivery of health education programs and services including assessment and referral of individuals with known or suspected substance abuse problems

• Through knowledge of Motivational Interview and Harm Reduction theories and practices

• Demonstrated knowledge of student development theories and models; working knowledge of psychological and cognitive developmental issues of college students

• Demonstrated skills in a variety of educational methods including presentations, workshops, trainings, public education campaigns, individual behavior change sessions, and small group discussion/facilitation

• Effective organizational and time management skills sufficient to independently set priorities and coordinate and complete competing assignments within established deadlines

• Demonstrated knowledge and application of fundamental principles of organizational development, environmental management, and cultural change

• Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated effectiveness in interacting with diverse populations specifically in college settings

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively verbally

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing

• Ability to assess needs and implement effective solutions for diverse client groups

• Computer and technical skills to manage online AOD programs

• Ability to exercise appropriate judgment and discretion, particularly in sensitive or confidential

• Related administrative experience with knowledge of standard office procedures, equipment, and appropriate computer programs (e.g., computers, internet, case management software)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Certified as an Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC) through the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) or Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor (CATC) through the California Association for Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE). or Substance Use Disordered Certified Counselor through the California Association of DUI Treatment Programs (CADTP) NOTE: Applicants holding an active registration as an alcohol and other drug counselor in any National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accredited organization but not certified will be considered for interview.

• Master's or advanced degree in public health, health promotion, health education/wellness, social work, college student personnel or a closely related field

• Experience working in alcohol and other drug-related programs, policies and/or service delivery specifically in a higher education setting

• Trained in BASICS - Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students

• Bilingual

• Experience in Environmental Risk Management approach to AOD including policy development and community organizing

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.

• Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test within 60 days of hire.

• Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.

• Selected candidate will be required to complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility Act) training within 30 days of hire.

• Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.

• The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
