TRAUMA REGISTRAR

Natividad may offer up to a $10,000.00 sign-on bonus to candidates hired into permanent, full-time positions.

Natividad is currently seeking two permanent, full-time Trauma Registrars in the Trauma Services Department. Under general supervision, successful candidates will identify, collect and abstract data for the trauma registry, National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB), Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and hospital quality data including data collection on defined trauma patients, entry of data into the registry, assuring accuracy of data, correcting deficiency in data, updating registry and abstracting data from registry for reporting and trend analysis in accordance with regulatory requirements and performs related work as required.

Examples of Duties:

  • Identifies all qualifying cases from the trauma patients brought into the hospital for inclusion in the registry, in accordance with American College of Surgeons (ACS) standards; updates previously included cases as needed; assembles chart copies as listed to complete abstractions
  • Identifies and abstracts data from patient medical records, including demographics, location of injury, and pre-hospital data, for the purpose of statistical reporting, analysis and inclusion into the trauma registry; collects data and researches missing patient care documentation as needed from multiple sources, including other facilities or agencies
  • Maintains an electronic registry that adheres to reporting requirements and complies with prescribed standards and regulations needed for trauma center accreditation by the ACS committee
  • Utilizes Abbreviated Injury Scale/Injury Severity Scores (AIS/ISS) and International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes to compile indicators and statistics for use by the Trauma Program Manager, physicians and other hospital staff
  • Generates and prepares reports on trauma populations, performs data searches for trauma related research projects, and provides information that will be used for performance improvement activities to facilitate continued education and system improvement
  • Maintains trauma and ambulance logs; reviews the logs for omissions and duplicates; provides log data to other departments as appropriate
  • Prepares and submits periodic data reports of trauma cases and information to the Trauma Program Manager, and other hospital staff/departments as directed; prepares and submits reports to the National Trauma Data Bank, in accordance with ACS guidelines
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of all patient information in compliance with hospital and federal regulations; maintains quality control of case findings, abstracting, coding, follow-up and data processing
  • Maintains records for continuing Quality Assurance indicators reviewed at periodic meetings 
  • Participates in continuing education coursework to stay abreast of new developments in registry data management, regulations, requirements, and trends; assists in updating policies and procedures related to trauma registry activities as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned

The Ideal Candidate:

Education: An Associate degree in a health-related field with completion of any ICD-10 coursework.


Experience: One year of experience as a Trauma Registrar or two years of experience collecting and entering data into a registry is preferred.

Certification:
Possession of current certification as a Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries (CSTR) issued by the American Trauma Society and Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist (CAISS) issued by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine. Some positions may require the possession of a Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist certificate issued by the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM).

Through knowledge of:

  • Trauma registration practices and procedures
  • Medical terminology applicable to pre-hospital care, emergency room care, and discharge care
  • Basic anatomy and physiology and anatomical terminology
  • AIS/ISS and ICD-10 coding 

Working Knowledge of:

  • Electronic data management and reporting, including the use of standard office software applications, Microsoft Excel and hospital database management (i.e. Meditech)
  • General requirements associated with maintaining trauma registries and ensuring compliance with ACS standards
  • Methods of researching
  • American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) and Title 22 trauma data requirements
  • Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) data submission process
