ORGANIZATION SUMMARY: The mission of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Monterey County is to provide support, education, and advocacy to individuals, families, and caregivers living with mental health challenges. NAMI Monterey County is an affiliate of the nationwide network that includes NAMI California and NAMI National. NAMI is the nation`s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Supervisor of Peer Services is responsible for recruiting and managing peer facilitators and volunteers to support community-based outreach and program delivery of NAMI signature programs. The person in this role will supervise a team of part-time staff and volunteers.

Responsibilities are conducted in a manner consistent with the direction provided by the Board of Directors, under the supervision of the Executive Director, and in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures, and the organization`s standards of excellence and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations established by Federal, State and local regulatory bodies. Compliance with requirements of funding sources is a priority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruits, trains, and supervises peer facilitators and peer volunteers.
  • Coordinates facilitators and volunteers to staff NAMI functions and classes.
  • Maintains records. 
  • Supports and celebrates facilitators and volunteers. 
  • Other duties to fulfill the NAMI mission may be assigned at the direction of the Executive Director.

  • Exceptional emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in Google Docs and Zoom.
  • Should consistently meet or exceed performance factors indicated on Performance Appraisal form.
  • Establishes and maintains effective channels of communications with the Executive Director, co-workers, family members and individuals requesting information and services.
  • Uses equipment and materials in a safe and acceptable manner, following established safety procedures and using appropriate safeguards while observing common sense rules of safety in all on-the-job activities
  • Valid driver's license, current insurance, and good driving record required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma. College degree preferred. 
  • Demonstrated lived experience—either through personal recovery from a mental health condition, through supporting a family member or loved one with mental health challenges, or an educational background in the mental health field—and the ability to use that experience to promote hope, recovery, and resilience in others.

Language Skills:

  • Proficiency in English required; bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred.
  • Ability to respond to email and phone  inquiries from the public, co-workers and business affiliates. 
  • Ability to read and write memos and correspondence that conform to NAMI-prescribed style and format.
  • Familiarity with the Zoom and Google Drive platform.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met (or may be encountered) by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands:

Travel to and from events may be required. Climb or balance; stoop, kneel or crouch. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and be mindful when setting up a NAMI tent or table at events. The requirements of this job include use of the computer and phone.

Work Environment:

Professional office. Noise level in the office work environment is usually moderate. The job requires frequent work in community settings which may vary with respect to sound levels. Employees are expected to maintain a clean and tidy work environment.

Wage: $31 per hour. 

Hours: 10 hours/ week, flexible with some required meetings during the workweek. Work is to be conducted onsite in the NAMI office in Salinas, California and remotely.
