Originally founded in 1997, Baskin Engineering is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. The Institute for the Biology of Stem Cells (IBSC) at UCSC supports all stem cell-related research, training, and activities on campus. The IBSC unites over 30 faculty members and their research groups, drawn from eight departments ranging from biomolecular engineering and applied math, to molecular, cell, and developmental biology, chemistry, and microbiology, to members of UCSC's Science and Justice Research Center. The IBSC leadership and many of its research laboratories and core facilities are housed in the Biomedical Sciences building at the center of Science Hill. IBSC researchers and trainees foster scientific exchange through regular stem cell clubs, collaborations and conferences, on our campus as well as regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The IBSC has recently acquired funding for multiple training programs to enhance the education and career

trajectories of postdoctoral, Ph.D. and undergraduate students. Trainee cohorts are based at UCSC and also work with faculty and students from our partnering universities and biotechnology companies. Training programs are centered around cutting-edge research, evidence-based mentoring and career development, and guided by a deep appreciation for diversity, equity and inclusion. The IBSC aspires to expand our research activities and collaborative connections at UC Santa Cruz and beyond.

JOB SUMMARY

The Institute for the Biology of Stem Cells (IBSC) at the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) is seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, and knowledgeable Program Director to join our faculty leadership team of biomedical science researchers and educators. The Program Manager will play an integral role in the oversight and implementation of our existing research, training, and core facility programs, and the potential growth of future research and training endeavors.

Current, extramurally-funded, multiyear programs include a postdoctoral National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) program funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS); a postdoctoral T32 program funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD); a pre-and post-doctoral training program from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM); a postdoctoral/undergraduate research and mentorship program sponsored by the Genentech Foundation; and a University of California Office of the President (UCOP)-funded Ph.D. student program. Our programs emphasize the benefits of fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive training and growth environment.

As part of the leadership team, the new Program Manager works independently to administer large, complex training and instrumentation grant programs and initiatives, including collaborations with other universities. Establishes budgets for IBSC training and instrument activities and works with principal investigators to secure institutional financial support for all IBSC programs. Provides financial oversight and projections of program budgets in coordination with research administrators. Liaises with UCSC faculty, partner universities, and program participants to ensure program success. Participates in short- and long-term strategic planning for grant-making, program evaluation, and outreach and recruitment efforts. Spearheads grant writing by soliciting contributions from faculty across departments and divisions and generating draft documents. Implements new training components in collaboration with on- and off-campus entities. Represents the IBSC programs internally and externally and manages websites and social media accounts, and drafts the IBSC newsletter. Organizes program-related IBSC events. Optional participation in national conferences.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $99,650 - $117,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% -

• Implements the currently funded training programs for postdoctoral, PhD student, and undergraduate trainees. Initiates the design of new and organization of on-going training activities within these programs, in alignment with the award documents, and for new potential programs to position IBSC for new opportunities. Activities may include workshops (pedagogy, mentoring, grant writing). Reviews trainee quarterly and semi-annual reports (depending on the program) and reports back any issues or concerns to co-directors.

20% -

• Participates in the development and oversight of program budgets in collaboration with research administrators and the IBSC faculty leadership. Works with co-directors to assemble and submit the information required by the agencies for annual reviews.

10% -

• Consults with faculty, researchers, and consultants to evaluate and enhance training programs, and secure continued and new training program funding. Reviews and analyzes the current programs' (NIH IRACDA and T32, CIRM, UCOP, and Genentech Foundation GAIN awards) and other funders' portfolios (NSF, private foundations) for emerging opportunities. Activities include the development, distribution, and collection of meaningful surveys to evaluate the benefits of IBSC's training programs to postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students and dissemination of findings to benefit other training programs and to share with sponsors.

• Represents programs with other organizations within the academic or scientific community and with government and community stakeholders sharing common objectives.

• Participates in IBSC outreach and recruiting. Works with co-directors to publish a quarterly IBSC newsletter by contacting IBSC members for content, organizing pictures and providing first draft writing of articles summarizing trainee accomplishments and IBSC activities. Facilitates interactions with UCSC's development office and media to highlight research discoveries beyond campus.

• Collaborates with stakeholders to apply for collaborative research or instrument grant opportunities for IBSC members.

• The IBSC Program Manager puts mechanisms in place to track and publish the career development of former, current, and future IBSC trainees, designs and manages the IBSC website and quarterly newsletter to approximately 2000 subscribers, including alumni and potential donors. Manages social media presence and occasional social events for trainees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.

• Academic background and experience in biological sciences and engineering.

• Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.

• Strong ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation.

• Program planning and project management experience.

• Strong oral communication skills.

• Strong written communication skills.

• Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.

• Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

• Solid fundraising experience.

• Strong negotiation skills.

• Experience with the structure, funding mechanisms and processes of the NIH and other sponsoring organizations that support biomedical research and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Terminal degree in a related field preferred (PhD, MD, etc.).

• Experience with the structure and goals of graduate and/or postdoctoral training programs in the biological sciences and/or engineering.

• Knowledge of or experience with stem cell or related research.

• Excellent conflict resolution skills.

• Familiarity with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values and guiding principles in higher education.

• Experience directing communications with policy makers and / or the media.

• Record of academic publications, fellowships or grants in related field.
