WHAT WE ENABLE YOU TO DO

We are looking for a full-time science associate to join our team who must reside in or close to Santa Cruz County.  You are smart, motivated, have a quantitative mindset and a passion for environmental science and clean water. In this role, you will  perform a variety of office and field-based work centered on applied resource management science. You should be comfortable with software technology and proficient in standard software tools related to collecting and managing environmental datasets like Excel, Google Sheets, etc. Experience with ArcGIS is a plus. You have strong communication skills (written, graphical, oral), and have technical expertise in environmental sciences, including but not limited to geomorphology, hydrology, water chemistry, statistics and/or environmental engineering. You have a desire to learn and develop new capabilities, a strong attention to detail, and an ability to work as a team member in a small group. 

Some field tasks can be physically demanding. Individuals should be comfortable with and capable of performing physical tasks outdoors, including carrying up to 40 pounds  of equipment, walking on uneven terrain, and paddling a canoe up to one mile in a lake type environment. 

WHAT WE NEED YOU TO DO

  • Field Work: Lead all aspects of field data collection related to water quality in both urban and rural environment, both  independently and with team members
  • Data Analysis: QAQC and analyze multi-year, multi-location hydrology and water quality datasets provided database tools.
  • GIS Support: Perform geospatial mapping and analysis tasks in ArcGIS to support science, product, and customer support staff. Some familiarity and training with ArcGIS is strongly preferred. 
  • Communication: Design and generate technically sound, compelling, and easy-to-understand data summary tables, graphs, and maps to convey research results to internal and external audiences. 
  • Product Quality Control: Support our software product development team by precisely executing software testing protocols to evaluate new product features and document results. 
  • Customer Success: Support our municipal and corporate customers by working within our procedures to classify customer challenges, collaborate internally on appropriate solutions and effectively communicate with our customers to ensure their success with our software tools. 
  • Organization: Collect, organize, and maintain spatial data, databases, reports, briefings, publications, and other relevant information consistent with defined protocols. Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of internal protocols.  

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE

  • Education: Bachelor`s degree
  • Experience: 1-2 years of field data collection and experience using Microsoft excel, google sheets, Esri ArcGIS, managing and analyzing large datasets, demonstrated background and passion for applied science
  • Mindset: Quantitative approach with keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Tech Savvy: Comfortable using mobile technology and eager to innovative 
  • Drive: Passion, motivation, urgency, and a desire to be the best and work with the best

WHAT WOULD REALLY MAKE US LOVE YOU

  • Advanced GIS skills: Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ModelBuilder, image classification, raster geoprocessing, Field Maps and Survey 123 field apps, ArcGIS Story Maps, ArcGIS Hub and/or publishing data to ArcGIS Online
  • Data science: Experience in data analysis via programming in R or a similar applications
  • Database management skills: Experience in managing large datasets in relational databases, like Microsoft Access, MySQL, etc. 
  • Mission-Driven: A passion for improving communities through clean water
