DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

The Primary Care Program offers primary care and same-day care services, supported by on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited clinical laboratory, and the campus pharmacy offering prescription and over-the-counter products. Counseling and Psychological Services, Case Management and Psychiatry services are available for crisis intervention, mental health support, and outreach services.

Additional departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op, the Cove Collegiate Recovery Program (CCRP), where students receive harm-reduction and recovery services; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports those who have experienced sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; Optometry, and Student Insurance and Referral Programs.

Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff and welcomes staff with an interest and experience working with college students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Medical Director, the Associate Medical Director is a member of the University of California, Santa Cruz Student Health Services Management Team and, in conjunction with the Medical Director, is responsible for ensuring that issues affecting clinical practice, quality of care, staffing and clinician job satisfaction are appropriately managed in our Primary Care and Same Day Care Clinics.

The Associate Medical Director assumes responsibility for directly supervising primary and urgent care clinicians, and assumes a leadership role in ensuring the quality and consistency of care. The Associate Medical Director provides assistance to the Medical Director in matters that affect clinical practice and functions as a strategic partner and consultant to higher levels of management.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $285,000 - $325,000 annually

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

60% - Clinical Staff Leadership

• Serves as a key member of the clinical services management and primary care leadership teams, ensuring quality of care and participating in compliance and accreditation, policy development, and clinical workflows.
• Supervises career and per diem clinicians in Primary Care and Same Day Care Clinics, including recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, quality ensurance, and performance appraisals.
• Manages continuing educational development programs for medical staff.
• Partners with campus stakeholders to address student health and wellness needs.
• Works closely with the Medical Director in addressing clinic-wide issues.
• Acts in the role of the Medical Director in their absence.

40% - Patient Care & Clinic Resource

• Maintains an active clinical practice in Primary and/or Same Day Clinics.
• Functions as a resource for consultation with clinical staff on complex or difficult patient cases.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Current MD or DO California medical license in good standing (see Special Conditions of Employment for additional requirements)
• Board Certification in an applicable primary care specialty
• Minimum 3 years post-residency work experience providing primary care and/or urgent care to adults and/or adolescents (fellowship training may be counted toward this)
• Advanced clinical skills appropriate to the role as a clinical leader
• Effective diagnostic and decision-making skills in handling more difficult cases
• Urgent care skills and competence in performing minor outpatient surgical procedures and managing urgent medical problems
• Experience leading a team of clinical professionals
• Advanced written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing with patients, colleagues, and staff members
• Advanced oral communication and listening skills, with the ability to receive and give clear and concise information and communicate clearly and effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff members
• Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and stated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the delivery of clinical services

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Clinical experience in a college health setting
• Additional training or clinical experience in areas that impact college-aged patients: adolescent medicine, infectious diseases, contraception, HIV prevention, depression, anxiety, gender-affirming health care, substance abuse, and disordered eating
• Experience with point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Current MD or DO California medical license in good standing.
• Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school.
• Board Certification in an applicable primary care specialty.
• Current DEA Registration NPI (National Practitioner Identifier) number CA CURES Registration (Department of Justice).
• Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.
• Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
• Must possess a current CPR certificate.
• Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test within 60 days of hire.
• Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
• Complete Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility (HIPAA) training within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
• Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies. Current health safety requirements are discussed during interview.
• The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
• Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
