We serve individuals who are challenged by loss, poverty, and stigma associated with a diagnosis of mental illness, HIV/AIDS or experience as a foster youth. Together we build relationships that promote paths of wellness and increase community involvement. El Dorado Center is a 16 -bed, short-term treatment program for individuals who are in crisis and may be stepping down from an inpatient hospitalization. EDC staff provide structured activities, individual counseling, crisis intervention, outings, groups including creative expression, and nursing services. Psychiatric services are also provided to residents by County Mental Health. Our staff philosophy is one of collaboration and team-decision-making. We are looking for individuals who have direct experience working with the seriously mentally ill population. Additionally, we are looking for skilled counselors who respond to clients and situations with an empathic, reflective approach. In addition to these skills and attitudes, qualified candidates will also be willing to participate in the various roll-up-your-sleeves type of residential and domestic tasks.
We currently have a Night Counselor opening at our El Dorado Center program, located in Santa Cruz. Four 10-hour shifts per week. Reporting to the Program Manager, under close supervision, the Night Counselor will be responsible for providing a safe and secure nighttime environment for the residents. The primary duty of the Night Counselor is to remain awake and vigilant and available to any resident having difficulties. The Night Counselor may also provide support and assistance to residents in planning and attaining their goals, with special focus on needs related to housing, physical health, issues of chemical dependency and mental health, stabilization of income, and reentry back into the community. Services will be delivered with dignity and respect for each individual resident.
Duties & Responsibilities:
•Establish a close working relationship with residents in the program.
•Maintain the safety and security of the facility during overnight hours. Maintain a safe, clean, and sober environment.
•Remain awake and vigilant overnight, and available to any resident having difficulties. Assist residents in crisis situations.
•May assist in supervising the daily activities of residents, including performing support services that assist residents in everyday living skills. This may include supervision of residents' chores, monitoring mealtime activities, conducting social and recreational activities, etc.
•May complete intake, assessment and evaluation paperwork with residents.
•May monitor resident’s use of medications; conduct resident urine tests.
•May transport residents to appointments as necessary.
•May maintain clinical charts and complete required paperwork in a timely manner as required by the County, State, and component guidelines.
•Participate in the effort to keep the facility clean, well maintained and running smoothly. This may include household duties such as shopping for supplies, laundry and cleaning.
•High school diploma or equivalent life experience.
•Supervised work experience in related program is desirable.
•Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends.
•Ability to work in an intense environment dealing with varied personalities and cultures.
•Ability to constructively deal with a high degree of physical and emotional stress.
•Ability to role model daily living skills in a positive manner.
•Demonstrated ability to organize and complete tasks.
•Ability to maintain and clean, safe and supportive environment.
•Must have a vehicle, valid CA driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and good driving record to be covered by agency insurance.
•Fingerprinting for licensing, criminal record clearance and necessary physical exams are required.
•Bilingual in Spanish and English highly desirable.
