Position Description:

Under the general direction of the Director of Student Disability Resources (SDR ) and day-to-day work consultation with other Disability Resources Advisors, the Student Disability Resources Retention Advisor is responsible for planning, development, delivery and evaluation of integrated disability support services and accommodations for eligible students. Performs highly complex and sensitive work with and on behalf of students with learning, physical, psychiatric/psychological disabilities and/or brain injuries, including people in crisis and those seeking assessment. Performs duties as a member of the Health and Wellness Services team and as part of the Division of Student Affairs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Conducts intake and detailed, interactive process with students. Interprets complex diagnostic assessment results, neurological reports and CSU policy to determine eligibility for services and verification of specific disabilities based on functional limitations. Provides in-depth advising about eligibility and disability management. Refers off campus for further or supplemental assessment. Authorizes eligible students for other campus disability accommodations; develops, implements, monitors, intervenes and modifies individualized student action plans. Serves as SDR liaison and advocate for students regarding academic affairs, Financial Aid, Housing, etc. Addresses complaints and facilitates solutions. Evaluates progress of each student through various methods.

• Provides retention strategies for students with disabilities, including those at-risk and/or on academic probation, through liaison on and off campus in areas such as academic advising, tutors, mentors, test or course accommodations, instruction in learning strategies, etc. Uses advanced, developmental, problem-solving, empowerment approach rather than prescriptive application to assist students in degree completion. Refers students for Alternate Media and Assistive Technology training, and off campus resources. In conjunction with other departments: develops, provides, tracks, and assesses efficacy of retention services for students with disabilities, including online learners and Veterans; resolves conflicts regarding equal access to the educational process; recommends solutions to problems for which campus precedents may not exist. Upholds professional standards, policies, system-wide mandates, executive orders, and procedures to serve all CSUMB students.

• Maintains files on each student in a highly confidential manner; frequently uses SDR 's student file system, databases and web-based information. Compiles and analyzes data to prepare reports and other outputs.

• Provides information and in-service training to applicable groups on and off campus on the necessity and responsibility of the university and campus partners to provide equal access under the Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act, and other current disability laws and mandates to facilitate provision of equal access while maintaining academic standards

• Assists in the development of innovative approaches utilizing available resources to meet the needs of students with disabilities and others, emphasizing self-determination, wellness and full participation in the learning process. Assists in development of student accommodation and retention processes for mailto:CSUMB@NorthSalinas, CSUMB 's Test Center, mailto:CSUMB@ Salinas City Center, online academic programs, etc. Serves as team member for Health and Wellness Services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the disability services in higher education; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of CSUMB . Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Demonstrated familiarity with solving problems related to requirements of the ADAAA , Rehabilitation Act and other disability-related policies as applied to higher education. Advanced skill providing cross-cultural disability management advising; understanding of compensatory learning strategies/techniques, and learning skills instruction. Knowledge and experience implementing best practices to improve retention and graduation rates of under-represented, first generation, and diverse college students with disabilities. Demonstrated ability to: independently obtain, compile, analyze, interpret and evaluate information and medical data; effectively convey ideas, concepts and recommendations in clear, concise reports and presentation formats; lead and serve on teams; adapt and be flexible to change in the work environment; provide outstanding customer service.

Knowledge of assistive technology used in higher education; bilingual (speaking/writing); thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and packages. Technical fluency with: Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite; Google mail, and calendar programs. A master’s degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Student Development, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a directly related field.
