Dept Marketing Statement
The Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE) Undergraduate Advising Office is a critical unit within Baskin Engineering. The office provides centralized academic advising for all undergraduate majors. The centralized office structure requires that advising staff stay current with their knowledge of all undergraduate engineering majors and associated minors. The director interacts with engineering students and faculty as well as engages with other campus-wide units such as other academic divisions, the central admissions office, the registrar's office and the college preceptors to support the success and retention of engineering undergraduate students.

Job Overview

Manages a student academic advising unit in the Baskin School of Engineering. Formulates policies and procedures for the student academic advising program. Develops the long-term organizational goals of the unit. Manages the financial and human resources for the unit. The director is charged with innovating advising and creating strategic ways to outreach to students. The director reports to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and works closely with other senior leadership within the school such as the Dean, Assistant Dean and the Director of Student Excellence, Engagement and Inclusion.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary Information: Salary Range: $73,000 - $104,000/annually. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Job Duties

• Provides direction to professional student academic advisors on the more complex issues encountered.
• Works with college / school senior management to plan and manage the academic advising function of the organization.
• Works with the Associate Dean and the Assistant Dean and other relevant senior staff on employee performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.
• Assures consistency of information disseminated, uniformity of policies implemented, and adherence of the Undergraduate Advising Office and its students and faculty to relevant practices and deadlines.
• Convenes and provides staff support to BSOE Undergraduate Curriculum Committee convened by Associate Dean. Analyzes proposed changes to the engineering curricula and academic regulations and develops recommendations and implementation plans to address the changes when necessary.
• Consults with Colleges and Undergraduate Education on academic integrity cases involving BSOE undergraduates.
• Maintains understanding of barriers to advisors' effectiveness and escalates their concerns to the Advising Council or other bodies, as appropriate.
• Represents the division to the Advising Council, and as part of that Council tackles campus-wide advising challenges and initiatives.
• Performs strategic planning to ensure advising resources and processes are consistent with student needs.
• Coordinates advising within the School and collaborates with Department Chairs and faculty.
• Works closely with the Associate Dean on arising issues.
• Collaborates with central offices of Admissions, Registrar and others regarding new students, transfer credit, transfer articulation, and other issues.
• Assists in training of new staff.
• Maintains Undergraduate Advising budget.


• Advises undergraduate students.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of the student academic advising function, and makes changes to the program to provide better service to organizational management, faculty, and students.
• Develops and monitors processes to ensure students receive timely responses to questions and proactively identify students in need of advising.
• Provides leadership of advising services to ensure adequate staffing for advising continuing and new students.
• Liaises with programs or departments regarding student issues, forms and policies.
• Advises potential transfer students regarding feasibility of completing engineering majors, the differences between the degrees, and how to best prepare for transfer.
• Reviews and evaluates transcripts for incoming transfer students to determine transferable credits.
• Advises transfer students about courses and community colleges and assists in planning their schedules to complete lower division major requirements.
• Assists in preparation of class schedule and university catalog.
• Provides information and statistical data, such as detailed enrollment statistics on the special program; analyzes data and writes reports as requested; maintains academic files.
• Develops and coordinates various seminars, orientations, workshops or other activities. Coordinates with the Academic Excellence Program (ACE) program, a joint program between the BSOE and the Physical and Biological Sciences Division on a wide range of issues including BSOE needs, program effectiveness, and areas of collaboration.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Demonstrated experience with academic advising and counseling techniques.
• Substantial experience in monitoring / assessing people, processes, or services to make improvements.
• Skills in social perceptiveness.
• Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and influence decisions.
• Strong knowledge of university and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Experience with supervision.
• Knowledge of student development theory.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
