School Overview:

Gateway School, in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA, is a CAIS accredited, independent K-8 day school of approximately 200 students that serves children with the intellectual curiosity and self-motivation to thrive in an academically challenging environment.  Our school is notable for its innovative instruction and programs, close student-teacher relationships, supportive parent community, and small classes.

COVID-19 Context:

Gateway School is currently operating an on-campus program that brings elementary students fully on campus, with an option for families to select an Opt In Distance Learning program. We have extensive health and safety protocols in place to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission on campus, including spending at least 75% of the day outdoors, and will review these with finalist candidates. Overview of Position:

Gateway School is seeking to hire a Fourth Grade Long Term Docent & Substitute Teacher to work in a self-contained classroom while the lead teacher continues to work remotely, and then to lead the class during the final six weeks of the year. This position works Monday through Thursday until May 1, and will become full time during the final few weeks of the school year.

The Docent position will begin immediately and last until approximately the end of April. The position includes:

  • Supporting the in-classroom experience for students including technology problem-solving, classroom management, and ensuring health and safety protocols are followed. 

  • Other duties may include playground supervision or dismissal duty.

The Substitute Teacher position will begin at the end of April, when the Lead Teacher is scheduled for maternity leave through the remainder of the year. The position includes:

  • Implementing language arts instruction via the workshop model and literature circles;

  • Teaching math using the Bridges to Mathematics curriculum;

  • Thematic and inquiry-based instruction in science and social studies, with the integration of visual arts as a means of demonstrating understanding;

  • Fostering a culture of learning through emotional intelligence, character education, Mindfulness, growth mindset, team building, class agreements and meetings, and conflict resolution;

  • Integrating iPads, computers, internet resources, and other electronic resources/tools;

  • Teaching as part of a grade-level team of teachers;

  • Field trips and other extracurricular duties;

  • Excellent communication skills with families, students, colleagues and administration, on both a regular and ad-hoc basis.



  • Bachelor's degree

  • Successful classroom teaching experience at the elementary level

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively and proactively with all members of the community, including students, faculty, staff, and parents


  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university

  • Current teaching credential

  • Knowledge and understanding of independent schools

  • Knowledge and understanding of child development, neuroscience-based instruction, and effective differentiation

  • An understanding of and/or commitment to furthering community conversations about justice and equity

  • A good sense of humor, a belief that collaboration enriches one’s work, and outstanding personal integrity.

Salary and benefits are competitive.  Salary is dependent upon years of teaching experience.  Benefits include paid holiday time and paid sick time.
