Assistant Teachers (K-5th)

Gateway School, in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA, is a CAIS accredited, independent K-8 day school of approximately 200 students that fosters intellectual curiosity, personal compassion, and active engagement. Standard hours for full time employees

8:00am-4:30pm M-F, with some later days, and occasional nights and weekends.


As a member of our Elementary Faculty, your responsibility is to nourish each child’s joy of discovery and passion for learning, and provide for each child’s social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and moral growth — giving special attention to the mastery of those basic skills and concepts that are the foundation of all future learning.

As assigned by the Lead Teacher:

  • Assist or lead the development and/or implementation of specific curriculum, instruction and assessment to the whole class, small groups and individual students.
  • Help plan and implement, and participate on, field trips and other special activities.
  • Maintain the classroom environment (including but not limited to organizing materials, designing bulletin boards, setting up learning centers & work areas, and photocopying, cutting, and filing materials).
  • Contribute formative and/or summative assessment data and information to student report cards, parent/teacher conferences, and other home/school communications.
  • Support the development of a healthy classroom social/emotional environment through effective classroom management and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with families, and communicate to families via blog, email, and other channels about student progress and/or concerns.
  • Attend STST meetings if scheduling allows.
  • Attend Specialist classes to support specific student behaviors if needed.
  • Support flexible and responsive scheduling changes.

Additional duties:

  • Regularly check-in with the Lead Teacher, and maintain excellent communication.
  • Attend BTSN and parent/teacher conferences.
  • Perform morning, lunch, recess, and curb duties as assigned by the administration.
  • Sub for the Lead Teacher as assigned (and procure a sub/support for the Assistant role).
  • Participate in Open Houses, and any other Admissions events as assigned
  • Attend all relevant division meetings, faculty meetings, committee meetings, in-service trainings, and other mandatory professional development (exact assignments to be made depending on FTE status).
  • Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students and families.

Salary and benefits are competitive. Salary is dependent upon years of teaching experience. The benefits package may include employee coverage for medical, dental and vision insurance, paid holiday time, paid sick time and 403(b) retirement savings plan.
