Originally founded in 1997, Baskin Engineering (BE) is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), the Director of DEI helps to build a community of practice around DEI in Baskin Engineering (BE) that involves faculty, staff and students. The director identifies and integrates existing initiatives, identifies new opportunities, develops strong collaborations and partnerships with other programs on campus, supervises program staff and oversees administrative budgets and other operational functions. The director plays a central role in supporting or leading grant proposal development to fund new and existing programs, and develops and implements strategies to increase student recruitment and retention of historically marginalized student populations.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $99,650 - $117,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
50% - Program Administration
• Oversee administrative functions of the DEI team including developing and managing program budgets and supervising and mentoring staff and student workers.
• Work with dean's office senior staff on operational functions such as staff human resources, space planning and financial management.
• Work with the Associate Dean for DEI to develop and implement a cross-cutting and integrated Community of Practice for Diversity Equity and Inclusion. Working with key senior leadership and senior staff, develop workshops and lead or initiate trainings for staff, faculty and students. Develop, distribute and analyze climate surveys for faculty, staff and students.
• Oversee the administration of existing DEI undergraduate student programs and develop and implement strategies to improve program effectiveness. Program examples include the Baskin Engineering Alliance for Professional Readiness Opportunities (BEAPRO), the MentorCollective, BEES, grassroots DEI initiatives, identity focused student organization support, and Diverse Voices. In collaboration with other key BE staff, work with Community Colleges to create pathways for undergraduate transfer students. Dotted line/shared supervision over Education Opportunity Program (EOP) counselors.
• Oversee and develop new programs for graduate students including support for antiracist fellowships, professional development and holding workshops and trainings on DEI. Working with the Associate Dean for Graduate Experience, develop a Graduate Student Council for DEI.
• In collaboration with department Chairs, department operations and academic personnel, develop best practices around DEI for faculty recruitments.
• In collaboration with the Chief of Staff and the Director of Staff Personnel, develop best practices around DEI for staff recruitments.
• Work with Baskin Engineering research centers and institutes to support DEI programming.
30% - Program Development
• Seek out opportunities, and develop proposals for grants to fund both programmatic work as well as research.
• Lead the development and implementation of DEI programs including
• Community-building events and workshops with students and invited guests
• Retreats for DEI discussions and planning with faculty and staff
• Assist in developing research, participate in professional conferences and provide public relations support.
• Working in collaboration with senior leadership, develop project and programmatic proposals to be included in annual campus or ad hoc campus resource calls.
• Working in collaboration with the Baskin Engineering Community and Engagement and Development teams, develop content for websites and marketing and communication materials as well as engage with alumni.
• Working with key divisional staff and campus partners, develop data requests and conduct analyses to assess the effectiveness of DEI programs on divisional and campus goals.
• Analyses will also be used in internal and external reviews of departments and national ranking surveys.
20% - Collaboration and Partnerships
• Build strong collaborations and partnerships with other academic division programs and key central units on campus, such as the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Chancellor's Office.
• In coordination with the Associate Dean of DEI look for opportunities to build external relationships with other UC campuses and community colleges, with a focus on creating pathways for underserved student populations.
• Facilitate the efforts of various departments, managers and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Oversee relations of the office with the educational and business communities for developmental and promotional purposes.
• Help coordinate regular training and development workshops in conjunction with the other units and campus resources.
• Develop and conduct in house curricula in coordination with peers in other academic units.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• Demonstrated advanced knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility programs and applies it to the completion of diverse diversity, equity and inclusion assignments.
• Academic background and experience in selected area of diversity, equity and inclusion
• Advanced oral communication skills.
